3 T. butter, melted
4 c. onions, thinly sliced
1⁄2 t. sugar
1 T. all-purpose flour
4 c. water
salt and pepper to taste
4 French bread slices, toasted
1⁄2 c. freshly grated Parmesan cheese

In a large saucepan, combine butter, onions and sugar; sauté 20 to 25 minutes or until onions are golden brown. Stir in flour; continue to cook for 3 to 5 minutes. Add water and simmer, partially covered, for 30 minutes. Add salt and pepper, blending well. Fill 4 oven-proof bowls with soup; top each with a bread slice and sprinkle generously with Parmesan cheese. Bake in a 400 degree oven until cheese melts. Serves 4.
