Molasses Sugar Cookies

3⁄4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1⁄4 c. molasses
1 egg, beaten
2 c. all-purpose flour
2 t. baking soda
1 t. cinnamon
1⁄2 t. ground cloves
1⁄2 t. ground ginger
1⁄2 t. salt
Garnish: additional sugar


Melt shortening in a small saucepan over medium heat; pour into a large mixing bowl and cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg. Beat well. Sift together flour, baking soda, spices and salt in a separate bowl. Stir into molasses mixture. Chill 4 hours. Form into one-inch balls and roll in additional sugar. Place on greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen.
