Swedish Ginger Cookies

1 c. butter, softened
1-1/2 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
2 T. dark corn syrup
1 T. water
1-1/2 T. orange zest
3-1/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 t. baking soda
2 t. cinnamon
1 t. ground ginger
Garnish: sugar


Beat together butter and sugar in a large bowl; add egg and beat until light and fluffy. Add corn syrup, water and zest; stir well and set aside. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and spices. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture. Roll dough into walnut-size balls; place on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten cookies gently with a fork dipped in sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Makes about 8 dozen.
