Vanilla-Butter Sugar Cookies

1-1/2 c. sugar
1-1/2 c. butter, softened
2 eggs, beaten
2 T. vanilla extract
4 c. all-purpose flour
1 t. baking soda
1 t. cream of tartar
1 t. salt
Garnish: colored sugar, candy sprinkles

Powdered Sugar Frosting:

1-1/2 c. powdered sugar
3 T. butter, softened
1 T. vanilla extract
1 T. milk



Combine sugar and butter; beat until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. In a separate bowl, stir together remaining ingredients except garnish. Gradually add flour mixture to sugar mixture until completely blended. Cover and chill for 30 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters dipped in flour. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Prepare Powdered Sugar Frosting: Combine all ingredients; beat until creamy. Frost cookies with Powdered Sugar Frosting; decorate as desired. Makes 3 to 4 dozen.
